Gesd project boosts teachers’accommodation in Nkhata Bay
Nkhata Bay District Council has constructed a K105 million teacher’s house at Sanga Community Day Secondary School (CDSS) to ease teachers’ accommodation challenges at the facility.
In an interview, Nkhata Bay acting director of public works Thomas Mpama said the council remains committed to addressing infrastructure gaps affecting public institutions in the district.

“Under Governance to Enable Service Delivery [Gesd] project, the council is implementing projects that directly improve service delivery. Provision of decent accommodation for teachers is key to ensuring quality education in our schools,” he said.
Mpama said improved infrastructure contributes to stability in schools, as teachers are more likely to remain at their duty stations when living conditions are conducive.
In his remarks, Nkhata Bay District Education Network Committee member Michael Mwanachawa said construction of the teachers house has brought relief to the school.
The school’s head teacher Marie Sauka commended the council for the project.
“We are grateful for this house as it has increased the number of teachers staying on campus. There are 11 teachers against two houses, and this created serious accommodation challenges,” she said.
Sauka said having more teachers on campus improves lesson preparation and ensures availability for remedial classes.
Gesd is a World Bank-funded project that enables district councils to implement development projects and it is implemented by the National Local Government Finance Committee
